Il Capolavoro Perduto
Tiziano Vecellio, Martirio di San Pietro.
Tiziano dipinge questa pala tra il 1528 e il 1530 per l’altare della Confraternita
di San Pietro Martire nella Basilica dei Santi Giovanni e Paolo di Venezia.
E' una delle opere più imitate e lodate dalle fonti:
«La più compiuta (...) la maggiore e la meglio intesa e condotta che altra
la quale in tutta la sua vita Tiziano abbia fatto ancor mai» (G. Vasari).
«... Era la più bella cosa in Italia» (P. Aretino)
«... Il più bel paese che fosse mai dipinto» (F. Algarotti)
L’opera però è andata irrimediabilmente distrutta in un incendio del 1867.
Oggi è sostituita da una copia seicentesca dipinta da Johann Loth,
ma le testimonianze più attendibili restano le stampe.
The Lost Masterpiece
Tiziano Vecellio, Martirio di San Pietro.
Titian paints this panel between 1528 and 1530 for the altar of the Confraternity
of Saint Peter Martyr in the Saints John and Paul Basilica in Venice.
It is one of the most imitated and praised masterpieces:
«The most coherent (...) the most impressive, the most original and
best executed work that Titian ever made in his entire life» (G. Vasari).
«... It was the most beautiful thing in Italy» (P. Aretino).
«... The most beautiful landscape that had ever been painted» (F. Algarotti).
However, the work was irremediably destroyed in a fire in 1867.
Today, a 17th-century copy painted by Johann Loth stands in for it,
but the prints remain the most reliable sources.
