Le «Poesie Ovidiane» - Il Ratto di Europa.
E’ Tiziano stesso a definire «poesie» la serie di opere di soggetto mitologico
dipinte per Filippo II, il figlio di Carlo V, già committente dell’artista.
Oltre al Ratto di Europa, per Filippo II Tiziano realizza anche Perseo e
Andromeda e Diana e Atteone, tutti soggetti tratti dalle Metamorfosi di Ovidio.
Tiziano lavora a quest’opera tra il 1559 e il 1562,
un lasso di tempo piuttosto lungo, dunque.
Ed ecco perché Tiziano si è talvolta servito del mezzo della stampa
come dono diplomatico verso i committenti che aspettavano
le sue opere finite, tra cui lo stesso sovrano Filippo II.

The «Ovidian Poems» – The Rape of Europa.
It is Titian himself who defined as “poems” the series of works on mythological
subject-matters for Philip II, son of Charles V, a client himself of the artist’s.
Aside from The Rape of Europa, Titian also paints Perseus and Andromeda and Diana
and Actaeon for Philip II, subjects that were all taken from Ovid’s Metamorphoses.
Titian works on this painting between 1559 and 1562,
a rather long span of time.
It is because of this that Titian has therefore at times made use of the medium
of print as a diplomatic gift towards the clients who were waiting for his
finished works – among them Philip II himself.
