Tiziano è tra i primi artisti a comprendere l’importanza della diffusione
della propria immagine per la costruzione di una certa fama, quasi di un mito.
Per questo realizza almeno due autoritratti, anche se probabilmente ne dipinge
altre versioni, che ad oggi risultano perdute.
L’autoritratto di Tiziano è poi un tema molto sfruttato nella produzione a stampa,
che ne moltiplica gli esemplari, sia durante la vita dell’artista che per molti
secoli dopo la morte, fino ai nostri giorni.
La collezione conta numerosi esemplari di queste riproduzioni,
che attraversano tutti i secoli fino ad anni a noi molto vicini.

Titian is among the first artists to understand the importance of the diffusion
of one’s own image for the building of fame, which eventually bordered on myth.
It is for this reason that he paints two self-portraits – although
he probably had painted other versions that are lost to this day.
Titian’s self-portrait later on becomes a much-exploited subject in relief
printing production. Its copies multiply not only in the artist’s lifetime,
but also for many centuries after his death, to the present.
The collection includes numerous copies of these reproductions,
which pass through every single century through years very close to us.
